課程概述

This course aims to explore the merits and drawbacks of play in human societies. It draws on current cognitive psychology and neuroaesthetics so as to engage well aspects of play: (1) the origin of language and emotion; (2) the growth of skills, knowledge and happiness among children and animals; (3) artistic uses and abuses of play among the adults. On top of the basic framework, this course adopts the evidential semiotic approach which encourages us not only to engage with oddities or deviant forms found in art, nature and culture, but to gain happiness and creative ideas from such dealings. Students are welcome to engage with any intriguing games or types of art as their term projects. All in all, this course enlarges our own invention of links, approaches and strategies as the main task for our appreciation of the arts in the wake of neuroaesthetics.

課程目標
This course aims to shed light on certain aspects of art: (1) how we can make good use of the changing, non-adaptive and non-exclusive features of syntagmatic combinations so as to lead a creative life; (2) how these features serve in giving rise to certain illusions from which we would gain pride and joy; (3) how we can conceive our emotions as a wide range of varieties that we seek to justify and integrate while working out various sorts of play scenarios.

課程要求
Students are required to (1) preview contents for each week; (2) participate rigorously in discussions; (3) write essays after discussions; (4) present briefings of midterm and final projects; (5) submit final papers.
